Ærøfærgen
THE NEW LOOK OF THE ÆRØ FERRY

A painting plies the waters

In 2011, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, in association with the Danish Arts Foundation and the Danish Arts Council, took the debate on art in the public domain out to the public, inviting the nation to have its say. 1,262 'art-less' locations were put forward by the Danish public, and one of the three winner projects was the exterior, all-inclusive, artistic decoration of the Ærø Ferry by artist-duo Randi & Katrine (Randi Jørgensen (1974-) & Katrine Malinovsky (1976-)).The decorated ferry now sails between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg as a gigantic waterborne painting.

A populist work of art

The ferry's starboard side is painted quite simply: black and white with yellow funnels, a red keel and painted portholes, as if there were cabins on board. The chubby little Ærø Ferry now looks like a classic luxury liner. Randi & Katrine drew their inspiration from old cruise ships. But from the portside, it looks as if there's a spyhole into the ferry, revealing painted cars and a bar with palms. In this way, the artists draw our attention to the ambiguity between ferry and motif, between reality and pictorial art. With their bright palette and naive idiom, Randi & Katrine have created tongue-in-cheek art that is intuitive and appealing. A populist work of art, picked by the people.

About our art

The Danish Arts Foundation and the Danish Arts Council in collaboration with Danmarks Radio (DR) [the Danish Broadcasting Corporation] are launching a major art and media project that will lead to the creation of three new artworks of a high quality three different places in Denmark.

The project is titled ‘Our Art’ and is based on the idea that anyone who is passionate about art can be a part of the process. Ordinary citizens will play a decisive role in the choice of sites, artists, and works. In a close dialogue with three professional art experts designated by the Danish Arts Foundation, ordinary folks will figure out where three new major works of art are to be located in Denmark. Then, the selection of artists and works will take place through a process in which citizens, art experts, the Danish Arts Foundation, and the Danish Arts Council will play a role.

DR will mediate the entire process, while the Danish Arts Foundation and the Danish Arts Council will ensure artistic quality. The Danish Arts Foundation’s Committee for Art in Public Spaces will also contribute the necessary funds to create the three works. ‘Our Art’ is inspired by ’Big Art’, a British project devised by the television station Channel 4. A huge debate was successfully generated in Great Britain that was both popular and artistically anchored.
